This abstract image is dominated by a double arch which in Herman Wald’s iconography symbolizes the Tablets of the Law. The centre point hovers over a circular receptacle within a bulbous form which flows outwards into a foetal shape. Inception means beginning, conception. This figure is iconologically related to the Mandorla (1948) by Jacques Lipchitz in his Notre Dame de Liesse which too is based on the idea of conception, but in his case it is a Christian motif. Herman Wald’s more universal rendering bears witness to his astonishing power of organic abstraction.
