In South Africa Herman Wald was fascinated by the vital force of Africa. He based this figure on the “Venus of Willendorf”, the famous 21,000 year old figurine in the collection of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. Like her prototype, this figure has no facial features. It represents the universal female entity, with the addition of the elongated form of a female child joined to her body. The emphasis is on her life-giving and life-enveloping tactile shape.
