This panel was created as a direct reaction to the news of the great European catastrophe. Herman Wald’s took a trunk of shamfuti wood and submitted himself to its material and the line of its grain, carving out these three tortured human figures, their arms upstretched like burning flames and their feet and legs consumed by fire. With this panel Herman Wald fuses Jewish martyrdom throughout the ages, from the Medieval period to the Inquisition with the horrors of the Holocaust.
