When one looks at something terrifying, one can freeze into immobility, as in the face of the Medusa, in Greek sculpture. This work was created just after the Holocaust in a chrystalline form of cubism. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Lot and his family were spared and commanded: “Flee for your life! Do not look behind you”. But Lot’s wife looked back and saw the devastation wrought by the sulfurous fire from the heavens, and she thereupon turned into a pillar of salt.
