This is one of a trio of abstract works together with Love, a biomorphic female figure, and Conquest,  three angular arches side by side. For Herman Wald these are the three driving forces of the human race. “Essen muszman, lieben braucht man” (eat one must, love one needs) he jokingly remarked in Yiddish. This ceramic piece  implies physical and spiritual hunger. The whirling central point, reminiscent of the organic abstractions by Henry Moore, is characteristic of Herman Wald’s last period in which he depicts the spinning centre as the  focal point of  vital force.
