The Biblical Job had been tested to the extreme. The theme reveals Herman Wald’s reaction to the Holocaust, the news of which had just reached South African shores. Its enormity was impossible to grasp and the Jewish faith was sorely tested with the question: how could God have allowed this to happen to his chosen people? Job’s head is twisted, his face turnedupwards in direct interaction with God. The gesture of his upstretched arms and downturned hands symbolizes the shape of the tablets of the Ten Commandments.
